League of Women Voters Hold Forum on Parcel Tax

Today I attended the Long Beach League of Women Voters forum on the parcel tax that will appear on the November ballot. Representatives of LBUSD including the superintendent, chief financial officer and president of the Board spoke in favor of the measure and representatives of community tax associations spoke against it.

I reiterated my support for the parcel tax based on my conviction that the District has behaved with fiscal responsibility to reduce costs including a salary freeze, a hiring freeze and reduction of administrative staff.  Further cuts would directly hurt school children by substantially increasing class sizes. This temporary measure will help the District continue to provide quality education for the students of the Long Beach Unified School District.

I thank the League of Women Voters for hosting this substantive and thoughtful discussion. For more information about the League visit: http://lba.ca.lwvnet.org.
